Nancy Metayer Bowen Obituary – Coral Springs, FL Death: Cherish Resident Has Died

The Coral Springs Police Department confirmed that her husband, Stephen Bowen, is a suspect. He was taken into custody after fleeing to Plantation, where he was apprehended at the Landmark Towers apartment complex. Police initially responded to reports of multiple gunshots at the couple’s home.

A friend of Metayer Bowen reportedly tried to contact her on Wednesday and, receiving no response, called Stephen Bowen, whose suspicious behavior prompted a call to authorities. Officers arriving at the home found Metayer Bowen deceased and issued a call for Stephen Bowen. License plate readers along SR 7/U.S. 441 helped law enforcement track him, leading to his arrest.

Nancy Metayer Bowen was a trailblazing public servant, environmental scientist, and community advocate. She was the first Black and Haitian American woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission in 2020, winning re-election unopposed in 2024. She also served on multiple advisory boards, including the city’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, the Charter School Advisory Board, the Broward County Climate Change Task Force, and the Florida League of Cities’ Legislative Committee.

A graduate of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a master’s degree in environmental health sciences, Metayer Bowen worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, and the Obama administration. She also contributed to Haiti relief efforts, served in Broward County government, and held leadership roles in nonprofit advocacy groups.

In 2024, she served as Florida Caribbean Vote Director for the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and was later named Vice Chair of Haitian American Voter Engagement for the Florida Democratic Party. She had been preparing to run for Congress.

Outside her professional life, Metayer Bowen was a devoted mentor and active in programs supporting young people and underserved residents. She celebrated her second wedding anniversary with Stephen Bowen in November 2024.

The Metayer family has endured significant tragedy recently. In December, Nancy’s 26-year-old brother, Joshua, died by suicide after years of battling schizophrenia. He was a survivor of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

The Coral Springs Police Department continues to investigate this active case. A press conference is scheduled at Coral Springs City Hall at 5:45 p.m. in the Sawgrass Room.
